I'm pretty sure there's no way that Gatchaman Crowds is a direct sequel to the old series, and I like superhero stuff so I'm interested in watching it.

I'm sure the old series is good, but I really do not have time to watch hundreds of episodes of a series I'm only somewhat interested in. That said, it is a revival of a Tatsunoko show, and I'd rather not have an experience like Yoru no Yatterman where there's a load of references to the old show I don't get, which interferes with my understanding of what's going on and in turn my overall enjoyment of the anime. So, is Gatchaman like that? Is it still an enjoyable experience even if you have no familiarity with the series?
